What is COP26?
This year’s UN Climate Change Conference, also referred to as COP26, consisted of nearly two weeks of panels, performances, and workshops. These live events encompassed all aspects of climate change topics. COP26 stands for Conference of the Parties, and the 26 signifies that this is the 26th meeting. In 1992, The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) created a document to align nations worldwide on climate change goals and establish responsibilities for its members. However, these rules have been loosely enforced, leading many people to question the impact of the original treaty. The COP26 is the next step in realigning goals and creating accountability for the 27 attending countries.
Energy topics, including transportation, conservation, solar energy, wind power, hydropower, and green jobs, are all at a crucial turning point. This generation of leaders and policymakers worldwide will be referencing the COP26 for outlooks and regulations regarding energy. The future of energy, greenhouse emissions, and our collective responsibility in saving energy and reducing our carbon footprint will be affected by this conference.
